Profile and pipe rolling – what is it?
Rolling pipes and profiles is one of the methods of plastic processing. It involves influencing the processed material using rollers to give it a specific shape and properties. During this process, the material is strengthened and given the appropriate curvature, such as a circle, arc or spiral.
Cold and hot rolling are used, the main difference being the effect of temperature on the processed material. Currently, in our plant we only use cold rolling. We use special bending and rolling machines that pass a given material between their rollers, changing its curvature.
Principles of rolling pipes and profiles
Bending steel profiles is a process during which the curvature of the material is permanently changed. In the element we are processing, some of the fibers are compressed, and those on the other side of the neutral line of the material are stretched. However, properly selected parameters mean that bending the profiles does not cause any changes in strength, technical properties or appearance.
Profile and pipe rolling is divided into 2 main methods:
- Cold rolling, where, using special rolling mills, the processed material is subjected to great force by hard rolls that change its curvature.
- Hot rolling, before bending, a pipe or profile is subjected to high temperatures reaching up to 800-1200°C. This increases the plasticity of the material, which allows it to be shaped more easily.
