Utility machining

Wire EDM Machining

Various technological methods are used for the processing of metal products. Wire EDM machining is an erosion treatment that, through electrical discharges, allows metals to be given various shapes, often impossible to achieve by traditional machining methods.

Die sinking and wire erosion EDM are the services that Marxam Project encourages you to cooperate in the field of material removal treatment. We are the precision machining company with a wide variety of services, if you are looking for metalworking services, do not hesitate to contact us.

Utility machining - what is it?

Subtractive machining is a term that refers to one of the metal processing techniques (electro erosion) that allows obtaining specific features – from shape, through roughness, to new, highly tolerated dimensions. This process occurs by removing excess material, which can occur by:

  • wire erosion EDM (WEDM machining)
  • deep wire erosion (EDM machining)

WEDM machining - what is wire eroding?

From the point of view of the usefulness of electro-erosion technology, wire EDM (commonly known as edm wire cutting) is the most frequently used method of metalworking (next to plunge-cutting). This is a method used for incising and cutting out fragments of complex shapes. It is also used when it is necessary to process materials with high hardness.

The WEDM treatment method is a process in which wire electrodes are used and they, through the use of the phenomenon of electrical erosion, remove the indicated material. Electrical discharge machining occurs as a result of an electric (spark) discharge that occurs between the working electrode and the workpiece subjected to the machining process – the material covered by the electrical discharge is immersed in a liquid dielectric, e.g. kerosene or deionized water.

EDM Machining - What is EDM?

Sinking as a subtractive machining is a process of machining a metal material using a copper or graphite electrode, which is usually made on a CNC machine. The very phenomenon of drilling is based on the use of erosion, which accompanies the electrical discharges that take place between the electrode and the workpiece in the dielectric environment.

EDM plunging, similarly to wire electric drilling, drilling steel and metal drilling, guarantees high precision of changes made in a metal product.

What are the advantages of EDM?

  • EDM produces extremely good surface finishes.
  • EDM can be used for extremely hard materials with tight tolerances.
  • EDM and WEDM machining ensures complex shapes that are impossible to obtain by standard machining (due to, for example, the inability to reach the given places with cutting tools)
  • EDM subtractive machining allows you to machine extremely small parts, creating tapered holes and fine passes in thick materials.
  • During EDM and WEDM machining, there is no direct contact between the workpiece and the tool – the risk of deformation or damage to delicate parts or materials is extremely low.

Wire electrical discharge machining – application

EDM is a method of precision machining materials characterized by an extremely high level of cutting difficulty, e.g. sintered carbide, tool steel or polycrystalline diamond. In addition, EDM is recommended for removal machining, which is difficult due to complex shapes or small size. Therefore, EDM is used e.g. for injection moulds, machining of turbine blades in the aerospace industry or even the thread of hardened material. In addition, Marxam Project offers wire erosion services and precision machining services for remanufacturing tools and manufacturing components such as gears, dies, and fuel rod machining.

metal grinding

Grinding

Metal grinding is a finishing treatment involving the treatment of surfaces of various shapes with abrasive tools. Grinding allows you to remove burrs (deburring) and roughness, as well as machining allowance. This surface finishing method allows to obtain a surface with low roughness and desired shapes and dimensions with quite high accuracy. Surface grinding is one of the most common methods of surface treatment, for a wide variety of metals, including grinding steel, metal grinding bits, grinding welds, aluminum grinding and many others.

Learn more about Marxam Project’s structural, tool, stainless and aluminum grinding services, deburring services and many others.

Metal grinding

Metal grinding is used to remove burrs, roughness, machining allowance and to give the surface a specific shape and dimensions. Finishes on metal also allow for the removal of any defects that have appeared, for example, during the operation of tools, devices, the welding process, etc. Flat grinding is also sometimes used to protect the surface.

Industrial grinding - Types of ground surfaces

Various objects, tools, devices, in other words, various surfaces and forms can be subjected to grinding – a properly selected grinding wheel performs various movements that allow the processing of various shapes. There are several types of grinding.

  • Cylindrical grinding, using a wheel grinder, using the longitudinal or transverse center method, center or centerless method. This process is based on rotary processing with a roller and allows for perfect metal smoothing – the imposed surface class determines the selection of materials and polishing parameters.
  • Metal surface finishes, both smaller and larger, using the circumferential or frontal method. This type of grinding makes it possible to obtain a shiny, dirt-, rust- and scratch-free surface where the roughness class can be made according to the customer’s instructions.
  • Hole grinding, where the grinding wheel and the workpiece make feed and rotation movements, respectively, or only the grinding wheel moves, in a radial feed motion. This method allows holes from small to very large diameters to be obtained.
  • Shape grinding is a type of surface finish machining, which consists in recreating the shape of the grinding wheel on the surface of the workpiece, using a transverse movement in the direction of the material. Thanks to this, wheels with small modules are obtained, e.g. toothing, threads, etc.

Aluminum or steel products are currently of very high quality, but despite this, grinding and polishing is necessary to remove any surface imperfections and give objects the desired shape or adjust the dimensions to the needs of the recipient.

surface protection

Protective coatings

Metal products, e.g. steel structures; components in the automotive, railway or aviation industries require additional protection against the negative impact of various external factors. Marxam Project offers professional protection of steel surfaces with protective coatings against corrosion.

What are protective coatings?

Protective coatings, which are also often referred to as conversion coatings, are a form of inorganic protection of the surface of metal elements against the destructive influence of various external factors. Making a metal protective coating that guarantees an increase in its surface hardness, provides additional protection against abrasion and allows for extra protection against gas corrosion caused by high temperature (so-called heat resistance) or additional protection against atmospheric factors. It is also worth mentioning that protective coatings and sealants are one of the forms of regeneration of metal structures and can be used to increase the aesthetics of the product.

Conversion coatings enable surface protection against:

  • x-rays,
  • weather factors (e.g. extreme temperatures, rain),
  • chemical factors (so-called chemical and electrochemical corrosion),
  • mechanical damage (e.g. minimizing the risk of damage to the bodywork by stones)

Marxam Project – protective coatings specialist

The Marxam Project is a galvanizing company that implements projects related to the implementation of industrial protective coatings (e.g. plating metals). All conversion coatings are manufactured in certified external companies – we only work with entities that comply with all environmental protection requirements!

Marxam Project, in cooperation with proven and certified cooperators, is able to implement most protective coatings. Our capabilities include:

  • hot-dip galvanized;
  • galvanic zinc (galvanizing metal);
  • powder painting;
  • cataphoresis (electrophoretic painting);
  • aluminum anodizing (soft and hard);
  • electropolishing.

What are galvanic coatings?

One of the methods of surface protection and production of protective coatings is the so-called galvanic treatment. This process involves applying another type of metal to the surface of a metal article. Galvanizing is an example. The application of zinc on steel elements is intended to guarantee resistance against the development of corrosion arising under the influence of air and water. This type of galvanize service is mostly used in the automotive, construction or aviation industries.

3D printing

Plastic and Resin 3D Printing

3D printing technologies are characterized by speed and economy, as well as a wide range of applications. We offer 3D resin printing and 3D plastic printing – materials that are used in industry. 3D printing as a service is great for creating prototypes – both in terms of price and execution time.

In recent years, this technology has gained much popularity and more and more customers are looking for professional 3D printing services in resistant plastics or in a resin known for its flexibility. Check our offer and 3D prototyping.

3D plastic printing

3D printing is a technique of making a plastic product, e.g. plastic, using the layer method based on a digital file. Since this printing does not cut the product out of a larger block, very little waste is generated. Plastic 3D printing services can be performed using various technologies, such as FDM, FFF or SLS, SLA – products obtained with these technologies will have different properties.

Industrial 3D printing services most oftenly use plastics, such as universal ABS, used in most industrial sectors. It can be used to make toys, electronic devices, car parts. ABS is distinguished by its resistance to weather conditions and high impact strength. Another material widely used for printing 3D models is PLA, recognized as the easiest to process and fully biodegradable. It decomposes in the natural environment within 3 years. PLA is mainly used to produce disposable dishes, foils and packaging, but it is also used to create products for the needs of agriculture, medicine and construction. Other plastics that can be used for prototypes 3D printing include:

  • PLA soft, a more flexible version of PLA;
  • PET – plastic for the production of bottles;
  • PC, highly resistant to mechanical damage polycarbonate;
  • TPE/TPY, highly elastic, rubber-like;
  • ABS – electrostatic material that conducts electricity;
  • Polypropylene, chemically resistant.

The choice of a given material depends on the properties of the printed product or prototype and in what industry or conditions it will be used.

Resin printing

Resin printing has recently become more competitive and more widely used than printing on plastics. 3D print in resin is characterized by excellent precision, better than other printing technologies, and very fast execution time, even several times shorter than FFF / FDM printing in plastics. Therefore, 3D printing companies can use it to create jewelry, castings or devices and tools for use in dentistry, medicine and architecture. The products will be perfectly smooth and with dimensions identical to the design, down to hundredths of a millimetre. Wherever the accuracy of execution counts, 3D resin printing service is used on a large scale to create prototypes for the needs of various industries. Very ambitious projects can be made quite quickly and products tested in practice, and then efficiently implemented, because the whole process is significantly shortened thanks to 3D product printing. Professional 3D resin printing services will also work well in the production of small series of tools or spare parts. Casting, transparent or flexible resins are used for 3D printing.
