Electrical Discharge Machining

Electrical discharge machining is a metalworking method that uses electrical erosion accompanying electrical discharges to give the material specific parameters, such as shape. At Marxam Project, we provide comprehensive EDM and WEDM services that will help your project look exactly as you imagined it. Trust us and experience cooperation with true professionals.

The quality controller is responsible for overseeing the quality of production processes that determine the correctness of the elements made in the company. Thanks to responsible work and properly selected quality criteria, the customer always receives a proven and correct product.

The basis of the QJ employee’s work is to ensure that manufacturing procedures are met, and that they are consistent with the declared values or customer requirements. A number of possessed competencies allow for capturing, recognizing and repairing errors that may occur during production.

What is EDM, or electrical discharge machining?

Electrical discharge machining, also known as electrical discharge machining (EDM) and wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), allows for the machining of precise, difficult-to-cut elements with complex shapes, for which access by a conventional cutting tool is difficult.

The electrical discharge process is also used in our plant for the regeneration of tools and the creation of injection molds, dies and gears.

Electrical discharge machining is a method in which electric discharges are used to give metal (or other materials) a specific shape and other properties, often impossible to achieve using different methods.

At Marxam Project, we offer both electrical discharge machining (EDM) and wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) services. Our extensive offer, which includes erosion machining, allows for a comprehensive approach to each project entrusted to us.

Advantages of EDM

EDM provides many advantages for a wide range of projects. Some of them include:

  • High accuracy – The first pass of the EDM tools allows to achieve high accuracy values. The basic feature of EDM machines is high machining accuracy at the level of 0.02÷0.001 mm, high smoothness (roughness) at the level of Ra = 2.5÷0.5 µm, and changes in the surface layer are insignificant (e.g. for NCl0 steel after rough cutting the thickness of the changed layer is less than 0.02 mm).
  • Tool wear – In the case of EDM it is really small. As a result of many years of work, it has been experimentally found that the better the efficiency and to some extent lower ER wear is obtained, the better the electrical conductivity of the electrode. The best results are obtained for copper, copper graphite, graphite and brass electrodes.
  • Properties of the machined surface – What strongly characterizes EDM and WEDM subtractive machining is obtaining a high-class machined surface; very often it does not require further technological processes to obtain the desired Ra roughness value.
  • Freedom of shape – In principle, this type of metal processing allows the creation of a product of any shape, impossible to achieve with other standard machining machines.
  • Possibility of working in very difficult materials - Electro-erosion allows the processing of difficult-to-process tool steels, high-speed steels, sintered carbides and even diamond.

The EDM process at Marxam Project

At Marxam Project, the EDM process is similar to other services we offer. It looks like this:

  1. Getting to know the details of the project – In a conversation with the client, we get to know their needs and requirements regarding the order. We also advise on the selection of specific project parameters in order to achieve the best result.
  2. Cost estimate and action plan – Based on the previous conversation, we prepare a planned action plan and cost estimate. We make every effort to conscientiously fulfill the previously agreed proposition.
  3. Electro-erosion – We perform erosion machining, thanks to which we create a variety of shapes with a high-class machined surface.
  4. Shipping – We send the created product to the client and at the same time answer any questions regarding the machining process itself and other issues related to the service.

Application of electrical discharge machining

Electrodischarge machining is a method of machining materials that are exceptionally difficult to cut, such as cemented carbide, tool steel, or polycrystalline diamond.

In addition, EDM is recommended for subtractive machining, which is difficult due to complex shapes or small size. Therefore, EDM is used, among others, for injection molds, machining turbine blades in the aviation industry or even threads of hardened material.

Marxam Project offers subtractive EDM for the process of tool regeneration and manufacturing elements such as gears, dies or fuel rod machining. We have over 18 years of experience in metalworking, which allows us to service many different industries and adapt our offer to the needs of a specific sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electrical discharge machining involves the use of electrical discharges to impart specific properties (e.g. shape) to a material.

Due to the properties of EDM machines themselves and their initial costs, we are limited to small parts that can be processed in this way. The details depend on the specific material and shape and the requirements placed on the part.

In die-sinking machining (EDM), the entire allowance is converted into erosion products, i.e. heated, melted and sublimated, while in the wire electro-erosion process (WEDM), only a small part of the processed material is subjected to this process.

Unfortunately, the costs of EDM are among the highest operating costs in the entire range of available metalworking methods. This is due not only to the relatively low speed of the process itself, but also to the costs of the machines and energy needed to carry it out. The exact costs depend on the material, the expected accuracy and the volume of the order itself.

Absolutely. Our experienced technologists will be happy to assist you in selecting all project parameters to achieve the best possible effect in terms of both technical and economic aspects.
